Rimmel Stay Matte Powder

Image

What is it?

A foundation setting powder that mattifies the face and helps prevent oiliness. Claims ‘up to 5 hours natural shine controlwith natural minerals’ and ‘helps minimise the appearance of pores’.

The Review

I discovered this product through a youtube beauty guru and had been looking for something to replace my MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural –  not that I don’t like it anymore – just that it is expensive, even though it lasts a long time.

I purchased the colour 005 Sandy Beige and when I tried it over my usual foundation routine for the very first time, I was thoroughly impressed. Although it didn’t add any extra coverage (incidentally this is something I don’t really need) it glided on beautifully.

It has a very light, smooth texture on the skin and such a natural finish that although it is mattifying (and it does this very well) I feel it’s barely detectable on your skin, lacking that sometimes common ‘cakey’ look.

Although I was impressed with the initial application, the real test would be how well, and how long it controls the oil for. To my surprise, as the packaging suggests, it did last the full 5 hours on me and even after that I didn’t feel it had worn off so badly that I HAD to reapply. I suspect on very oily skin it could last a little less, perhaps around 3 or 4 hours but I am so impressed with this product it has actually completely replaced my MAC powder.

I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and much prefer the more natural finish. The only issue I can see anyone having with this is the colour selection.

There are only 7 shades and they are all for light skin tones apart from the ‘Transparent’.

I know that sometimes transparent/translucent shades can look ashy and unnatural on darker skin tones and as I’m not of that colouring I can’t comment on whether this shade from Rimmel does have this issue or not.

Worth The Money?

Absolutely, for £3.99, a natural finish and the product delivering on all of it’s claims, this has replaced my MAC powder. If you can get great products for less that work just as well then why not?

This product is readily available on the highstreet in Boots and Superdrug, larger chain supermarkets with a make up section and online:

Sleek Blush By3 Palette – Initial thoughts

sleekblushby3

What is it?

A Sleek blusher palette containing 3 shades of blusher – 2 matte shades and one shimmery shade. The one I have is shown here and is the orange/peach/coral palette.

Initial thoughts:

These palettes come in a few different colour ways and contain 3 highly pigmented blusher colours all in a sleek black palette ideal for travelling.

These are highly pigmented, smooth, blendable and great value for money. In the palette I bought, there are two matte shades – a bright orange and a bright coral – and a shimmery peach too. I can’t say I know about the other colour ways as I didn’t look at them properly in the shop but I believe that there’s a pink toned palette and also a brown/bronze coloured one. I would assume the ratio of matte to shimmery shades would be the same for the other palette but perhaps not. If you have any of the others then feel free to comment below and let us all know!

Worth the money?

As with all the Sleek make up I own, I was thoroughly impressed. The matte shades are pigmented and smooth, these colours aren’t chalky and it’s great to have a shimmery shade and matte shades all in one palette. The packaging is great for travelling, sturdy and yet not to bulky – sleek, slim and simple with the added bonus of a large mirror.

These palettes cost £9.99 here in the UK and are available from the Sleek website or Superdrug.

Maybelline Colossal Volume Express Smokey Eyes Mascara

What is it?

A new mascara by Maybelline based on the original Volume Express Colossal but with the addition of black matte eyeshadow to the formula to give a smokey look.

The Review

The brush is really big but surprisingly easy to use and control – it grabs all of the lashes including the ones right in the corners. I have to say, I don’t quite understand the addition of the eyeshadow to the formula, to me it doesn’t necessarily look more smokey but does make the lashes noticeably more matte.
I love Maybelline mascaras in general and the original Volume Express is a staple in my make up bag. I can’t really see a smokey effect personally but there is definitely something a bit different about it, to me it seems to give the lashes a really volumising feathery effect.
Worth the Money?
I love this mascara, it’s long wearing, doesn’t flake on me and gives the lashes lots of volume and some added length. I often feel like the more high street or ‘drugstore’ brands’ offering of mascaras are way better value for money and at £7.99 for a tube this one is no different.
This mascara is available from Boots, Superdrug, larger chain supermarkets with a make up section and as always, the official Maybelline website:

Diego Dalla Palma Snow White and the Huntsman palette

What is it?

A palette partnered with the Snow White and The Huntsman movie containing 6 wearable eye shadows, an eyeliner and a lipstick.

Thoughts?

This palette is really great and contains six very wearable shades for eyes; three shimmery and three matte shades all with appropriate Snow White related names.

Snow, Shield, Mirror Mirror, Fairest, Destiny and Battleground are all beautiful neutral colours and very pigmented. Also included in this palette is The Wicked Queen lipstick a classic blood red and the Dark Night eye pencil in a good deep black.

At £25 for all of this, I think its a bargain. The packaging is cute, the colours are smooth and pigmented and the red lipstick and black liner are make up staples and great quality.

I bought this product from Tesco :

The Body Shop – Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion

What is it?

A light moisturiser infused with tea oil to hydrate the skin whilst helping to control and prevent blemishes.

Worth the Money?

I got on with this moisturiser very well and am actually on my second tube.

Now, this has in no way replaced my Liz Earle oily/combination skin moisturiser as I use this at night time as its richer. This moisturiser has become my favourite to use under make up, or even just as my morning moisturiser if I’m not wearing any.

Everyone knows a good base makes a difference to how make up will sit on your face and for me, although I don’t suffer with full on acne and generally have pretty good skin, I am prone to small breakouts in my T-zone where I get oily.

I expect that this is also due to the line of work I’m in as if I’m shooting you can guarantee I will have heavy make up on and we all know that constantly wearing a lot of make up can have a negative effect on the skin.

This moisturiser isn’t particularly thick or particularly runny, although a little goes surprisingly far. The smell is somewhere inbetween tea tree and fresh grass but I don’t feel it’s overpowering and it certainly didn’t put me off. Let’s face it, if you’ve purchased a product with tea tree in it then it’s going to smell like it!

This moisturiser is ideally suited to normal, combination or oily skin as it has mattifying properties and is therefore not suitable for dry skin.

It applies smoothly and evenly and feels lovely and fresh on the skin leaving me sufficiently moisturised but not greasy or shiny – ideal for going under make up, especially if you’re prone to getting oily throughout the day.

As for the ‘clearing’ bit, this is by no means a miracle product but I have seen a noticeable improvement in my skin and in the number of breakouts I suffer so for me this is something I will continue to repurchase.

If you have similar skin to mine and just need something for oil control and a bit of preventative action then this is great and will help, if you have more problematic skin then The Body Shop do a whole Tea Tree range of products that I have heard great things about. Tea tree has always been known for its positive effects on problematic skin and I have personally always found that things that work on spots for me always contain it in some form.

Where can I get it?

This product is available from The Body Shop and online stores and retails for £7 for 50ml or £3 for 15ml:

Urban Decay Naked Palette

What is it?

A gorgeous palette containing 12 neautral eyeshadows by Urban Decay.

The Review

This is a palette every make up fanatic needs (well – this or the Naked 2 palette – or both 😉 ). It’s full of a wide variety of neutral shades, both shimmery and matte and none of the usual chunky glitter that you run the risk of getting with some Urban Decay shadows. The shadows go on smoothly and blend very well.

This palette is perfect as a gift or for your average make up junkie and there are shades for a very natural look, summery bronze shades and of course some spectacular smokey ones too.

Worth the Money

Personally I feel like this palette is quite pricey (it’s £36 – ouch!) but because of the quality of the shadows I would still say it’s definitely a good investment as there are a huge variety of looks that can be done with these colours.

This palette can be bought from some department stores and the official Urban Decay website:  http://www.urbandecay.co.uk/

Top 10 Neutral MAC Eyeshadows

Swatched from left to right as listed below.

Samoa Silk

This is a light matte peach colour ideal for blending out darker colours in the crease or all over the lid for a warm, natural every day look.

Expensive Pink

This is a mixture of gold, pink and coral with a light shimmery finish. This colour is ideal for day or night, brush loosely over the lid for a fresh but natural pop of colour or pair with MAC’s Carbon in the crease to intensify the look for night time. I even sometimes use this as a blusher just on the apples of my cheeks for a natural glow, the shimmer in it gives a lovely fresh look.

Kid

This is a light brown, ideal as a brow colour for lighter brows or to blend out a smokey eye as its neither too light or dark.

All That Glitters

This is a gorgeous light peachy pink with a golden sheen. This colour can be worn with warmer tones for a more sultry look or with a darker colour in the crease to add some drama.

Nylon

This is a bright white gold shade with a shimmer that gives an almost ‘wet’ look. This colour can be use to brighten the eyes by placing in the inner corner of the eyes, as a highlight under the brow bone or even as a highlight just along the top of the cheek bones.

Swatched from left to right as listed below.

Cork

This is a medium brown shade ideal as a crease colour and could be paired with any shade for a neutral look.

Woodwinked

This is a gorgeous antiqued bronze/gold colour. This a good shade to be worn on its own just blended out into the crease or for a night time look can be worn with a darker colour in the crease and lots of black liner.

Satin Taupe

This is a grey/bronze shade brilliant for a wash of colour on the lid for day time or layered with a flat stiff brush, the colour is buildable and a good lid shade for a smokey eye.

Twinks

This brown based shade has red and plum tones with a golden sheen to it so although neutral, is very unique and will compliment all eye colours and skin tones.

Ground Brown

This matte dark brown is good as a warm toned dark brow colour, can be used to darken the crease or smudged along the lash line to make lashes look thicker.
