Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream (unscented) – I finally get the hype

photo

What is it?

This product is marketed as a skin protectant balm and has many, many uses.

The Review:

I have to admit, I have previously owned the scented version of this product as I was given it after a catwalk show and apart from using it a couple of times as lip balm, I just didn’t get the hype. It smells funny, it’s thick and I just didn’t understand the product.

A couple of years later, a photoshoot/travelling marathon in London, Italy and then Paris left me with dry cracked sore lips, worse than I have ever experienced. I had redness all around my mouth, I couldn’t open my mouth properly for fear of re-splitting the sides and nothing was helping. After googling furiously about what to do to help, the 8 Hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden kept cropping up again and again. Having exhausted all products from Carmex and Blistex (even the medicated stuff) I rummaged through my drawers and found a tub of the unscented version that I had picked up in a Boots sale for under £10 and smothered the area in it.

After 24hrs of reapplication I was stunned. The redness was almost gone, my lips were less sore, smoother and the splits at the sides had almost completely cleared. Now, I really get this product, I cannot live without it.

I have since started using it for numerous other things such as:

Smoothing the ends of my hair

As an intense hydrating mask when my skin is really dry

For soothing sunburn

For rough dry hands

Helping heal small cuts

Holding eyebrows in place

A glossy finish on the eyes

Giving the skin a healthy glow by placing on the tops of cheekbones

The list goes on and on and on. The only downside I can think of is maybe the price, it’s fairly expensive stuff but as shown above, can be used for lots of different things. The smell isn’t great but an unscented version is now available and this product lasts a long time as so little is needed for each use.

Worth the Money?

This will set you back around the £15 mark for 30ml depending on where you buy it but places such as ‘Fragrance Direct’ and ‘Cheap Smells’ often carry this product as a discount. Amazon is also a good one to check out but beware of the cost of the post and packaging as this can cancel out the discount sometimes!

This product is a multitasker and now I finally see why it is so loved by so many. A true gem and totally owrth the money AND the hype. Thoroughly recommend. The unscented version is available at Feelunique.com – the link for 30ml for under £15 is below 🙂

Clinique Super City Block

What is it?

An oil-free sunblock for the face that protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays as well as damaging free radicals. SPF40.

The Review:

This product, as with all Clinique products is allergy tested and fragrance free. This goes on nicely and doesn’t make my skin shiny at all. The high SPF means its great all year round, especially in the height of summer, but remember lovelies! Winter sun can be just as damaging to your skin!

This product is great for the beach or for every day wear with no make up but I found that when I used it under my foundation I didn’t like the finish as much. My foundation didn’t blend as well and was rather difficult to work with which was not appreciated! I use the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation or the Lancome Teint Miracle and it didn’t work brilliantly for me under either. That’s not to say that it won’t under other foundations but be aware it may change the finish for you like it did with me.

Now, when I say it didn’t work brilliantly under my foundation, I’m not saying it looked bad because it absolutely didn’t. I just didn’t like the fact that it changed the way my foundation felt and looked, it was different than it normally feels and to me, I choose a foundation for the finish and how it looks on my skin. To put something on underneath it to find my normal make up was different over the top was just a little disappointing.

Normally I expect a primer (which is what it says it can be used as on the tube) to make my make up go on different but obviously in a smoother, very positive way. The change this made to my foundation was not positive as it was harder to work with.

Worth the Money?

This retails at £15.50 for 40ml of product which is a fair amount for the price you are paying (bearing in mind this a high end skincare and cosmetics brand).

If you burn in the sun or have oily skin this is ideal as its protects the skin fully and is non-greasey. Great all year round and will go under make up, although it may change the finish.

For the price and the size of the tube it’s a great product if you’re concerned about sun damage or all the pollution from city living.

The Body Shop – Earth Lovers Shower Gel

What are they?

Deliciously fresh and fruity shower gels that are completely soap, sulphate, paraben and colourant free. The bottle is also 100% recycled!

Worth the Money?

These retail for £5 each for 250ml and come in 7 variations, including an unscented one – ideal for sensitive skin.

Their bestseller is ‘watermelon and eucalyptus’ and I can see why, it smells divine!

All of these lather very well for something with no sulphates (if you use sulphate free shampoo you will know what I mean) or soap and last me about 5 weeks which for me is very good indeed!

They don’t smell overpowering but do enough to fill the room a little and leave the scent lingering on the skin for a couple of hours afterwards.

I had never been a huge ‘shower gel person’ until I discovered these and now they’re my favourite, they’re earth friendly, reasonably priced, last ages and smell gorgeous while leaving me feeling delightfully clean and fresh. Even the unscented one lathers nicely, cleans well and feels lovely on my skin.

I’m very impressed with these and it is especially impressive that an unscented variation is available.

All in all? Worth every penny!
